Damit-Clause

Subordinate clauses with damit (so that) express the intention or reason behind a certain action. A damit-clause is used when the subjects of the main clause and subordinate clause are not the same.

Dein Vater hat dir Geld gegeben, damit du die Universität besuchst. - Your father gave you money so that you can go to university.

Wie viel, damit ich nach Hause fahren kann? - How much to go home?

Damit ich dir das geben kann. - So that I could give you that.

Damit ich das Meer sehen kann. - So that I could see the sea.

The modal verbs sollen and wollen are not used in damit-clauses because damit expresses an intention, a wish to do something. It is possible to use the modal verb können, but it is not essential.
