Reporting Past Events

To refer to past events in reported speech German uses Konjunktiv I Perfekt form which has the following structure:

Konjunktiv I of haben/sein + past participle of the full verb

Sie sagte, sie sei am Sonntag nach Hamburg gefahren.

When appropriate, adverbs of time and place need to be changed.

Sie sagte, sie habe es am Tag zuvor gemacht. - She said she had done it the day before.

As in the present tense, when Konjunktiv I of the auxiliary verb haben is identical in form to the indicative, the Konjunktiv II is used instead.

Walter sagte, sie hätten nur zwei bestellt. - Walter said they had only booked two.
