Der-words are the definite article and any other adjectives that act like definite articles with nouns. They are called demonstrative adjectives: dieser - this, jeder - each, jener - that, manche - many a, solcher - such, welcher - which.

Since er, sie and es can refer both to persons and things, the possessive forms sein- and ihr- can both mean its in English.
